- Mix all the dry ingredients together in a large bowl.
- Add the buttermilk and water and mix. I use a wooden spoon but quite quickly you will need to mix by hand. I tip onto clean work surface that has been lightly floured..
- Once mixed, make into a ball them flatten down slightly. With a bread knife, score a cross about a 1/3 way through dough.
- Transfer to baking paper on a baking tray / stone and pop in the oven.
- Bake for 40 mins..
- Remove to wire rack, let cool and start eating! Enjoy.
While soda bread with add-ins like currants and caraway can be delicious, it's not at all authentic In Ireland, soda bread tends to be plainer and more restrained Here is a classic recipe adapted from Darina Allen, an Irish television personality and the owner of the Ballymaloe Cookery School in Shanagarry Stir in raisins.
